Michem® Prime Applications
Binders for Nonwovens
High adhesion, a low melting point and an absence of surfactant make Michem® Prime an outstanding coating for nonwovens. It can be run on existing resin bonding equipment and, compared to traditional latex systems, provides excellent efficiency at low add-on levels. Fabrics coated with Michem® Prime can be heat-sealed at low temperatures, and are thermoformable.
Primer for Extrusion Coatings
When extruding onto a non-porous substrate, or using an extrudate that will undergo chemical bonding, Michem® Prime makes an excellent primer. It enables extruding at low melt temperatures. Under these conditions, the polymer coating not only has excellent adhesion but also exhibits good water-, grease- and chemical resistance. Utilizing this “tie coat” functionality, dissimilar materials can be combined to produce a substrate with the unique properties of each material.
Flexible Film Coatings
Flexible film coatings can be formulated with Michem® Prime. For specific flexible fim coating applications we also offer a range of
Michem® Flex products.
Graphics Arts
To improve gloss and ink receptivity, Michem® Prime is used as an ink binder. It is also highly efficient for heat-transfer printing, thermal transfer and transfer metallization--due to its sharp decrease in viscosity above the melt point, pigment tolerance and excellent washability.
Heat-Seal Coatings
Michem® Prime can be used in heat seal formulations where its high hot tack and low heat seal temperature can be advantageous. For specific heat seal applications we also offer a range of
Michem® Flex products.
Laminating Adhesives
Michem® Prime has strong adhesive bonds that enable its use in such laminations as foil:foil, paper:foil and paper:paper. It is a clear, flexible coating which adds excellent barrier properties. Effective at low coating weights, it can be applied with low-viscosity coating equipment including gravure, flexo, air knife and rod coaters.
Medical Packaging
Because it adheres to Tyvek® polyolefin, Michem® Prime provides an effective heat-seal for gas-sterilized packaging of medical implements and devices. It produces a clear, flexible, FDA-compliant barrier to water, grease and solvents.
Skin Packaging
Applied over printed skin packaging board, heat-activated Michem® Prime facilitates the sealing of film and board. It offers good gloss, scuff resistance and hot tack.
Metallized Paper
Used as a pre-treatment to prepare the base substrate to accept metallization, Michem® Prime substantially improves vaporized aluminum adhesion to paper. It can also be used as the post-metallizing coating to protect the aluminum surface, reduce oxidation and impart printability. Metallized paper coated with Michem® Prime finds its way into gift wrap, multiwall bags, candy twist-wrap and holographic applications.
Paper Coatings
Because it can be clay-filled, run neat or used as an additive, Michem® Prime is a good choice for a wide range of applications in the paper coatings industry. Using conventional coating equipment, formulators can quickly modify a coating recipe to improve barrier properties and prevent moisture damage to paper.
Paper and Textile Sizings
The addition of Michem® Prime improves the internal bond, tensile strength and folding endurance of paper. It offers excellent adhesion to nylon and cellulosic fiber, and can be applied at the size press, slasher, calendar stack or in an off-line web coating operation. Michem® Prime is resoluble and removable by conventional wastewater treatment.
Breathable/Water Resistant Textiles
In textile applications, Michem® Prime improves water resistance while allowing moisture vapor transmission. The moisture vapor transmission rate can be controlled with selected Michem® Emulsion additives. Substrates coated with Michem® Prime exhibit good chemical and water resistance while also providing a ‘breathable’ coating.
