RustBan®
RustBan® is saving one Ford facility $136,000 per year in materials and labor, while reducing waste and the risk of injury
RustBan® is a Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) treatment for corrugated boxes and other types of primary packaging. It can eliminate the material and handling costs associated with placing corrosible products into secondary VCI-treated bags or wrappings.
Metal products can be quickly and easily placed into RustBan®-treated primary packages for storage or shipping. This takes a step out of the manufacturing operation, saving time and money while reducing waste and the risk of injury.
Cutting Costs with RustBan®
At a facility in Livonia, Michigan, Ford Motor Company found that RustBan® eliminated the need for a drive shaft sub-bag. It also freed up three workers whose job was to package each shaft in the VCI-treated polyethylene bag, seal the bag with tape, then insert the bag into a corrugated carton.
RustBan® has a wide range of applications:
Auto/Heavy Equipment
In addition to protecting parts being shipped to assemblers, RustBan® is also being used on aftermarket parts going to the consumer.
Steel Mills
Tubes, cores and liners used to wrap coiled steel can be coated with RustBan® to protect them from corrosion. Michelman’s barrier coatings can also be applied to the wrappings to provide moisture and water resistance.
Consumer Packaging
RustBan® can be applied to tier sheets used to ship and store aerosol cans and other forms of metal packaging.
Electronics
The interface between different metals in semiconductors and other electrical components can cause corrosion in high humidity environments. RustBan® can protect multiple metal types from corrosion. Michelman also produces a line of conductive and dissipative coatings that protect electronics from damage by static charge.
Military
Military forces worldwide use VCI packaging to protect parts from corrosion. RustBan®-coated packaging can provide corrosion resistance to packaged parts for up to two years under typical warehouse conditions.
Corrugated, solid fiber and other forms of paperboard packaging can all be treated with RustBan® at the converting level. Partitions, slip sheets and other specialty paperboard products can be produced with RustBan® applied to both sides.
RustBan® is:
- Repulpable
- Hot melt and cold-set gluable
- Nitrite-free
- Blade or rod coatable, inline or offline
