Consumers are increasingly aware of the life cycle of packaging and its place in the circular economy (CE). The power of consumer choice and brand loyalty has required the packaging industry to reassess its relationship with waste, resources, and material use. Paper packaging, in many circumstances, fits well into the circular economy model because paper is a highly recyclable and renewable resource.
There is incentive throughout the packaging industry to create both recyclable and compostable packaging, and there is a real benefit for the value chain to collectively work together (from raw material suppliers to brand owners) to create solutions that provide excellent performance at a reasonable cost. Michelman has engaged the value chain and developed a network of partners to discuss the opportunities and challenges of developing barrier and functional coatings that offer both recyclability and compostability.
Recyclable, repulpable, and PFAS-free, our coating solutions can light-weight packaging by providing an alternative solution to current wax, PE extrusion coating, and film lamination techniques. Additionally, our coatings offer paper plates, cups and packaging improved water barrier for perishable and frozen foods like seafood, fruits, and ice cream; oil and grease resistance for bakery and fast food service applications; for boxed foods like cereal and crackers; and improved release properties for frozen meats and meals. VAPORCOAT® recyclable water-based coatings confer high barrier to paper-based packaging and wraps. Designed for low moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), most VaporCoat® grades retard water vapor transmission to keep perishable foods fresh, frozen goods intact, or sensitive contents in factory condition. Because of recent demands by consumers for food safety and preservation, additional VaporCoat® products can inhibit contaminants ordinarily found in recycled paper from migrating into packaged dry food.
HYDRABAN® products combine two properties critical to packers of perishable and building products: water-resistance and release. They penetrate the paper, giving a wax-impregnated look to kraft paper without sacrificing recyclability. These paper treatments also offer water repellency with excellent gluability and printability.
MICHEM® COAT solutions are superior all-around coatings known for their grease and oil resistance. They also offer several other benefits including stain control, abrasion resistance, ease of off-line application, good gluing, surface sealing, and priming for subsequent applications. Typical packaging applications include bakery products, fast foods, pizza boxes, adhesive packaging, electrical components, and metal parts.
Paperboard is a versatile carton material that demands a barrier treatment when used in aggressive environments. Corrugated boxes are a staple solution for the shipping and storage of fresh produce and other perishables as well as environmentally sensitive materials. For longstanding or emerging applications, Michelman has the trusted brands of barrier and functional coatings to cover the gamut of performance requirements for paperboard and corrugated.
The market for single-serve food containers continues to evolve to paper-based solutions such as folding cartons (aka folding boxboard), microflute corrugated trays, molded pulp, and many other structures. Michelman coating solutions provide oil and grease barrier and other key functionality for the safe and reliable use of paper in food service containers.
Tubes and cores, gypsum board, packaging for corrodible metal components (auto parts, etc.), tier sheets, and numerous other industrial applications rely on Michelman coating technology.
