Michem® Flex water-based coatings are designed to impart critical functionality to flexible packaging while supporting sustainability goals. The right coatings help packaging maintain an air-tight seal, withstand contact with water, oil, and grease, and protect contents from the effects of oxygen, mineral oil, and moisture vapor.
Our formulations are engineered to support improved end-of-life options, including recyclability and compostability. They are repulpable and PFAS-free, with direct and indirect food contact options. Select grades carry recyclability certifications from PTS, Aticelca, and Western Michigan University, reinforcing our commitment to both performance and compliance. Whether transitioning away from polyethylene or PLA liners, or replacing multi-material film structures, Michem® Flex helps make more sustainable mono-material and fiber-based packaging possible.
Many grades in the Michem® Flex family can be combined with other coatings to form complete coating systems to meet the most demanding performance and sustainability goals.
With solutions optimized for paper, film, and metallized substrates, Michem® Flex coatings help converters and brand owners unlock recyclable and repulpable packaging formats without compromising shelf life, line efficiency, or consumer experience. Key applications include dry food, confectionery, coffee, frozen foods, food wraps, medical packaging, e-commerce mailers, and personal care.
Our Michem® Flex portfolio includes:
Our heat seal coatings deliver strong, reliable bonds at low initiation temperatures with excellent hot tack. Designed for use across diverse structures, many grades also eliminate the need for primers, simplifying your converting process. Learn more about our heat seal coatings.
Grades in the B Series control oxygen, water vapor, and mineral oil transmission, extending shelf life and protecting product integrity. They also enhance oil, grease, and water resistance, making fiber- and film-based substrates viable for a wider range of applications. Learn more about our barrier coatings.
Michem® Flex primers improve adhesion, enable printability, and support downstream processes like extrusion and metallization. Many P Series primers also provide functional barrier enhancements, including resistance to oxygen, moisture, and mineral oil. Learn more about our flexible packaging primers.
M Series topcoats enhance print protection and visual appeal while adding surface durability. Available in matte, satin, and gloss finishes, they resist UV exposure, scratching, and marring. Select grades also add moisture resistance for more durable packaging. Learn more about our topcoats & overprint varnishes.
Improved sustainability isn’t an add-on. It’s central to the mission.
The take-make-waste model of the past is no longer viable. A circular economy—one that designs materials, products, and systems for reuse, recycling, and long-term value—is essential.
Michelman coatings enable packaging structures that align with circular economy principles: supporting recyclability, compostability, and fiber recovery. These technologies reflect our commitment to helping industry stakeholders accelerate their transition to sustainable systems.
Discover how Michelman technologies and insights can help advance your sustainable packaging strategy. Our guide explores the principles of circular design and how coatings enable recyclable, compostable, and repulpable solutions.
