We have a great opportunity for an Asia Regional Controller to join our Accounting team based in India.  In this role you will oversee statutory and US GAAP accounting across the Asia region, with responsibility for local team management, accounting, treasury, and tax compliance in India, Singapore, Japan, and China.  Included in the responsibilities of the Regional Controller are ensuring quality of financial information throughout the accounting process, complete and accurate statutory and US GAAP reporting, income and other tax compliance, and monitoring and oversight for regional transfer pricing.  Additionally, the Regional Controller will ensure the Asia accounting organization has written accounting policies and procedures, and appropriate internal controls aimed at ensuring accuracy, reliability, and consistency of our financial information.

You will partner with Regional Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) on the annual planning process. You will be responsible for overseeing tax compliance, leading regional tax projects, and supporting global tax projects.  The Regional Controller will report functionally report to the Global Controller.

Primary Responsibilities

• Accounting and Internal Controls
  • Develop, implement and monitor adherence to global and local accounting policies
  • Support and educate the accounting organization on new accounting pronouncements impacting the company’s financial statements
  • Manage the annual statutory audit for the India, China, and Singapore entities and oversee preparation of the statutory financial statements along with the statutory to US GAAP reconciliation and supporting documentation
  • Develop and maintain appropriate accounting policies and procedures, and internal controls, in Accounts Payable (Procure to Pay), Accounts Receivable (Order to Cash), Financial Reporting (Plan to Report), Capital Asset and Inventory Management, and Payroll
  • Drive consistency in the utilization of accounting systems such as JD Edwards, Insight, TM1, BlackLine, etc.
  • Responsible for purchase accounting related to acquired businesses
  • Ensure all transactions are recorded in the general ledger following US GAAP and statutory account rules
  • Monitor and analyze variances in the balance sheet
  • Lead regional audit planning and close-out meetings, and provide periodic updates to auditors on relevant matters throughout the year
  • Identify and communicate statutory accounting matters to the Global Controller
• Treasury
  • Ensure effective internal controls around cash movements including processing customer payments (cash receipts), making vendor payments, intercompany payments, payroll processing, expense reimbursements, and any other form of cash movement required to operate the business
  • Maintain relationships with banking partners
  • Manage Know Your Customer compliance for the region
  • Ensure compliance with regional credit facilities terms, and prepare covenant calculations
• Tax Compliance
  • Ensure all local tax compliance filings are complete and accurate
  • Tax compliance includes income, sales, property, GST, VAT, real estate, property, franchise, and other modes of taxation
  • Oversee the preparation of tax-related documents prepared by client schedules in support of the annual compliance activities and ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare & maintain 12-month taxable income projections based on the business forecasts
  • Support development of, and compliance with, the company's transfer pricing policies
  • Manage transfer pricing compliance and monitor adherence to target benchmarks for related party transactions across the region
  • Ensure transfer pricing documentation is in place for all regional transactions between related parties including management fees, technical service fees, sales commissions, etc.
  • Identify and communicate statutory tax matters to the Global Controller timely
  • Lead regional tax projects, as assigned
  • Lead regional tax planning and close-out meetings, and provide periodic updates to tax team on relevant matters throughout the year
  • Negotiate tax fees across the region on regional projects
  • Administer financial aspects of Free Trade Agreements in Asia
• Business Partner
  • Partner with the functional and business leaders to support, develop, and achieve annual operating plans
  • Liaise with regional commercial and FP&A leadership on matters pertaining to credit and collections and other pertinent matters
  • Liaise with regional procurement and FP&A leadership on matters pertaining to purchasing, receiving, and other pertinent matters
  • Support M&A and expansion activities in the region
  • Partner with the FP&A Director on matters pertaining to payroll (accruals) and cost accounting (inventory)
  • Liaise with business and functional leaders to identify, analyze and explain, where needed, the accounting implications of everyday business decisions
• Management
  • Manage regional accounting teams, including general ledger, tax, credit & collections, accounts payable associates
  • Conduct performance reviews of staff and oversee their training and development to ensure they have development plans that contribute to their personal growth
  • Frequently meets with staff to discuss goals and provide feedback and coaching
  • Work with Global Controller to plan for growth of the team and region, including establishing goals that align with strategic objectives and evaluating competencies and gaps
  • Effectively select, onboard, and train new associates, as needed
  • Reinforce company values within the team, build team morale and cohesion
• Other
  • Maintain accounting and tax knowledge and ensure that staff is aware of new and existing relevant procedures, guidance, and accounting rule changes
  • Maintain lease portfolio in LeaseQuery and ensure accurate US GAAP accounting
  • Oversee, lead, and/or participate in physical asset counts as needed
  • Position may require up to 50% travel

Critical Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Expertise in statutory financial accounting rules in India, China, Japan, and Singapore
• Expertise with US GAAP accounting rules, financial reporting, and consolidation
• High level of proficiency in statutory income, payroll, and transaction tax rules (GST, VAT, etc.)
• Major ERP experience such as SAP, Oracle, or JD Edwards; experience with BlackLine reconciliation software would be ideal
• Effective relationship builder and communicator, trusting and trustworthy, responsive, objective, courteous, solution-oriented, influencer, and driver for personal growth
• Demonstrate an ability to effectively manage time, work independently, and prioritize multiple ongoing assignments and deadlines
• Process oriented, problem-solving mentality, and ability to do cause-and-effect analysis
• Expert knowledge of Excel and the ability to present succinctly using PowerPoint
• Fluency in English required, Mandarin language skill preferred but not required
• Easily adopts and embraces emerging technologies and operates with a systems orientation
• Experience in effective change management
• Experience with setup and implementation of a shared services center

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or undergraduate degree with Masters of Accountancy, or equivalent
• CPA, Chartered Accountant, or equivalent, required
• 8+ years of experience working in a similar role at a multi-national corporation, or 5+ years in public accounting working on multi-national audits
