Primers

Primers make packaging work.

Michelman water-based primers promote adhesion between many types of inks, extrudates, and substrates. Whether bonding a fiber substrate to a polyethylene (PE) extrudate or preparing film for metallization, Michelman primers deliver strong, stable adhesion.

Many Michelman primers can also do more than improve the bond strength between layers in a packaging structure. Some grades offer additional functionality, such as oxygen or moisture barrier performance, making them a smart way to simplify complex packaging structures—a key design strategy in the pursuit of recyclable and compostable structures. These multifunctional primers, effective at low coat weights, can enable lighter packaging that requires less material to produce, unlocking greater sustainability without sacrificing performance.

Whether you need better anchorage for metallization, a boost in print receptivity, or improved extrusion performance, Michelman primers make it possible.

What Kind of Adhesion Do You Need?

Michelman primers enable the bonding of dissimilar materials that would otherwise be incompatible, acting as a critical interface layer. They support a wide range of packaging formats, substrates, and line speeds, helping converters and brand owners achieve reliable adhesion and performance. We offer different types of primers to match specific process and application requirements. Michelman’s experienced team of application experts can help guide your selection of the most appropriate primer for your particular end use.

Extrusion

Bond paper or film to extruded layers. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) extrudates don’t naturally adhere to paper or film. Without a primer, packaging structures can delaminate—especially under pressure or heat. Michelman extrusion primers anchor extrudates to the substrate. They bond at lower temperatures, helping protect sensitive materials and reducing energy use.

Metallization

Keep metal layers intact. In snack packaging and other structures requiring barrier properties, a metallized layer is often essential—and fragile. Michelman metallization primers improve the bonding of vacuum-deposited metal to substrates and help prevent flaking or peeling of the metal layer. These primers also provide consistent barrier performance throughout converting, sealing, and storage.

Print Receptivity

Ensure ink adhesion and clarity. Poor ink anchorage leads to smearing, scuffing, or flaking. Michelman print-receptive primers create a surface that holds onto ink, supporting sharp text and graphics, better overcoat bonding, and durability to remain readable from production line to retail shelf.

Designed for the Circular Economy

Our primers are designed to help achieve improved end-of-life outcomes. They are water-based, PFAS-free, repulpable, and food contact compliant.

The Critical Role of Primers in Modern Packaging

Michelman primers are used across many industries to make materials work together in the packaging we rely on every day.

Strengthening Snack Packaging Layers to Avoid Delamination

From metallized chip bags to paper-based flow wraps, snack packaging must endure rigorous handling, from printing and converting through distribution and stocking, to use by consumers (including harrowing journeys in lunchboxes, backpacks, and sports fields). Michelman primers ensure each layer adheres reliably, preventing delamination and helping maintain visual integrity across paper, film, and foil constructions.

Supporting Longer Shelf Life in Coffee and Dry Foods Packaging

Coffee, powdered drinks, and other dry foods require stable, multi-layer packaging that holds up during storage. Michelman extrusion primers enhance bonding in these structures, while also improving barrier performance and protecting against separation during lamination or use.

Enabling Recyclable Paper-based Packaging with Functional Bonds

As converters shift from PE laminates to fiber-based constructions, primers are key to bonding paper with film, foil, or coatings. Michelman primers allow paper to bond with film, foil, or other coatings, creating recyclable mono-material packaging options without sacrificing performance.
